Reducing the risk of mares developing EAFL involves reducing the exposure of pregnant mares to EAFL-causing caterpillars. Reducing exposure includes locating pregnant mares away from areas where caterpillars and their nests or nest contents may be present, and eliminating the population of caterpillars and nests as much as possible. Local knowledge of host trees and nest types will help you locate nests and caterpillars for removal. The dispersal of nest contents after they have been abandonned by caterpillars in autumn also needs to be considered.
